This ceramics class will focus on the rich heritage of Greece as well as the student’s travel experience. It will begin with a three-week preparation period in hand building methods at Gulf Coast Community College.
After three weeks of ceramic “boot camp” students will leave Panama City to work in Greece. The first stop will be Athens, where students will visit the Acropolis and new Acropolis Museum, the National Archeological Museum and more. The group will then travel to the island of Skopelos via the hydrofoil.
We will continue with the hands-on part of the class on the island with a periodic field trips to meet local artisans and visit the Folklore Museum. The students will draw on the rich artistic and cultural traditions of Greece, the Island of Skopelos and their experience as a traveler to create work in clay.

Participants will be encouraged to spend free time working independently, seeing the island – it’s beaches and historical sites, and experiencing the local cuisine and culture. Marty and Laurel will provide information and suggestions regarding the best ways to explore the surrounding beauty and atmosphere of the island of Skopelos and the culture of Greece.
In the studio… consideration of place, time, history, mythology and travel will be emphasized. Risk taking with image exploration and development will be encouraged.

June 24th – July 14th
Greek culture will provide the framework for conceptual and visual development with visits to local artists, cultural sights (monasteries, churches, the old town), folk dancing and food. The land and seascapes will provide an additional foundation for inspiration. The course will accommodate students of all levels with individualized instruction to develop concepts and projects appropriate to a student’s level. The instructional model for this class will be the traditional studio class with demonstrations of technique, discussion and development of concepts expressed through projects and individual and group critiques.

Hi, I’m an American student looking to participate in a program in the year 2012. I spent 3 months in Athens in the fall of 2010 and believe my soul truly hasn’t left. I’d like to be put on the news letter and possibly get an application?
